'One Piece Film: Gold' News Update: Anime Movie Beats 'Finding Dory' At Japanese Box Office
Two days since its release, "One Piece Film: Gold" has already grossed 11 million dollars in Japan alone, and is now tagged as the best anime movie ever made by the franchise.
As of July 31, the film had earned 2,364,107,000 yen and sold 1,709,909 tickets across 743 screens.
"One Piece Film: Gold" is the 13th feature film of one of the bestselling mangas by Eiichiro Oda, and is the largest distribution in any Japanese film. Since it opened on July 23, the film has received an outstanding reception from viewers, surpassing "Finding Dory," which earned just 2.1 billion yen in a similar nine-day period at the Japanese box office.
Due to the film's success at the box office, it has become the fastest grossing summer film this 2016 in Japan. It has also earned the record for opening-day tickets in 2016, with 820,830 tickets sold in its opening weekend.
"One Piece Film: Gold" centers on the story of the One Piece crew as they set their foot on Gran Tesoro, the largest entertainment city in the world where the noblest and richest people, predominantly government officials and pirates, go for amusement and pleasure.
The city is made of gold because its main antagonist, Guild Tesoro, has the power of the devil fruit "Goru Goru no Mi," which turns anything he touches into gold. It also tackles some relevant social issues, particularly slavery and other forms of social injustices.
The film is set to open in 33 other countries worldwide over the rest of this year.
