One Direction New Album 2014: 1D Makes History As ‘Four’ Album Debuts On Top Of The Billboard Charts
One Direction set a new record after their album Four, which debuted at the top of the Billboard Charts, making them the first group to debut their first four consecutive albums at number one.
The British boy band's first three albums, 2011's Up All Night, 2012's Take Me Home and 2013's Midnight Memories, debuted at number one on the United States charts. When the group released their fourth studio album Four this week, it followed its predecessor's debut at the top of the Billboard 200 charts.
Due to this feat, the quintet have swept up more than one Billboard record in the chart's 58-year history.
One Direction is now the first ever group to debut four consecutive times at number one. They also managed to top the list four times in less than three years after Up All Night and Take Me Home were released in 2012 and Midnight Memories in 2013. They are also the fourth act overall to have four consecutive albums at the top, following Britney Spears, DMX and Beyoncé.
One Direction also had the second biggest album sales of this year with 387,000 copies sold in their debut week.
A tally by Nielsen SoundScan put the boy group on second place following Taylor Swift's 1.287 million debut with 1989. Swift dropped with album sales of 214,000 this week for a grand total of 2.21 million.
This also marked a musical group's biggest sales week since One Direction also made topped the charts with last year's 500,000 haul for Midnight Memories.
One Direction attended Sunday's 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles where they sang their latest single "Night Changes" and won three awards. The group won Artist of the Year and the fan-voted awards, Favorite Band and Favorite Album with Midnight Memories
On a side note, the group recently attended Wednesday's ARIAs in Sydney, Australia.
