Oculus Rift Games News: More Virtual Reality Titles to Come Following Partnership with Microsoft

Last week, Oculus VR, the company that developed the Rift virtual reality headset, surprised the gaming world by announcing a partnership with Microsoft. The partnership means that a wireless Xbox One controller will be shipped with every Oculus Rift. However, the collaboration between the two may be an indication of more things than just a few launch games.

IB Times reports that as of now, the Oculus Rift will support three major games - a third-person RPG adventure titled 'Chronos,' 'Edge of Nowhere,' a Rift exclusive that was announced very recently, and 'Eve Valkyrie,' a first person space shooter. However Microsoft has more plans than these games up its sleeves. The Redmond-based tech titan's upcoming Windows 10 will offer native support to the VR headset, when Oculus Rift starts shipping in early 2016.

While this will be opening an entire host of games to potential VR support, right now, it is difficult to predict whether or not Oculus will be beneficial for traditional games.

While in some genres VR will certainly be a new experience, generally speaking, it would make gaming more difficult. Theoretically, jumping into a fighting game would be wonderful, but including Oculus support to any sideways fighting game such as 'Mortal Kombat X' would never give the player a better look at the goings on. On the other hand, the continuous movement would in all probability make the player somewhat nauseous. The same will be true for isometric shooters like 'Hatred,' or turn-based games such as 'XCOM' - so, there is nothing special that the players will gain by adding VR compatibility.

According to the report, hence, it is important that developers, especially those of Microsoft, identify the precise games that can be actually improved by the Oculus. Doing so will help to avoid a slew of new titles with budgets wasted on integrating Oculus support when the amount could be spent on improving the core games. Nevertheless, the outlook of VR games is greatly thrilling, and so everyone concerned would like to see it grow into a significant advancement for the industry.

As of now, the Oculus Rift is scheduled to be made available in Q1 2016.
