NFL News: League Bracing for Will Smith’s Upcoming Movie ‘Concussion’

Will Smith's upcoming movie 'Concussion,' which deals with head injuries sustained by players that have plagued the league, has put the NFL in a tight spot. According to reports, the NFL is currently bracing for the movie, which is set for release on Christmas Day, reports IB Times.

Citing league sources, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the NFL owners "spent significant time" during their recent league meeting on how they ought to respond to the movie.

Meanwhile, IMDB.com reports that currently 'Concussion' is in post-production stage. Aside from Smith, the movie will also feature Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who starred popular movies like 'Thor: The Dark World' and 'The Bourne Identity' as well as the series 'Lost,' in addition to Alec Baldwin and actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Both Smith and Baldwin will portray the characters of doctors in the upcoming movie.

The summary of 'Concussion,' as posted by the movie database, says that the film is "A look at how American football players suffer from major head injuries and lifelong debilitating problems as a result of repeated concussions and efforts by the National Football League to deny it."

The PBS news show 'Frontline' reported that there are 446 concussion-related cases just from the last three seasons. An article in the website states, "Scientific research increasingly suggests that football can lead to a wide range of long-term brain conditions."

Several players suffered a concussion last season and they include tight end Jordan Cameron, tight end Jace Amaro, cornerback Philip Gaines, guard James Brewer, wide receiver Julian Edelman, offensive tackle Anthony Davis, running back Edwin Baker, linebacker John Abraham, and linebacker Jaquian Williams.

'Concussion' has been directed by Peter Landesman, while a group led by director Ridley Scott has produced the movie.
