NFL Broadcast 2016 Keeping Up With The Times; News Unveils Deal With Twitter

Twitter came up on top of the bidding game for the NFL broadcast 2016 as commissioner Roger Goodell revealed the news about the social media winning over other companies like Yahoo, Verizon and Amazon.

"Twitter is where live events unfold and is the right partner for the NFL," he said.

The multi-year deal gives Twitter the right to broadcast NFL 2016 games on Thursday nights through streaming, as well as daily content to subscribers.

But the deal doesn't mean that fans could no longer watch NFL broadcast 2016 games through traditional TV networks.

In explaining the rationale behind Twitter streaming NFL broadcast 2016, Goodell said, "There is a massive amount of NFL-related conversation happening on Twitter during our games."

This is the same sentiment from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey who added, "People watch NFL games with Twitter today. Now they'll be able to watch right on Twitter Thursday nights."

The deal with Twitter for NFL broadcast 2016 is significant for two reasons, according to Sports Illustrated quarterback mailbag.

First is the fact that NFL execs recognized the power of social media to reach out to viewers who use the Internet rather than TV to watch games; and second they can now reach out to even more younger audience.

That means people no longer have to use two monitors. They can use the Internet while at the same time watch NFL broadcast 2016.

Brian Rolapp, NFL EVP for media, told Sports Illustrated, "The change of demographics with young people in this country was a big factor driving this decision. How young people consume content-oftentimes digitally, on their terms-is becoming really important."
