NFL 2015 News: Tebow Inches Closer to Roster Spot; Seahawks Sign Fred Jackson
Fans of Tim Tebow are inching closer and closer to finally seeing their man back on an NFL roster as the Philadelphia Eagles have traded quarterback Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional late-round pick, CBSSports reports.
The report notes that the deal is considered a "stunner" in advance of Saturday's deadline to trim rosters down to 53, and also opens up an opportunity for Tebow to fight for a slot as the Eagles' third quarterback. Barkley served as tough competition for Tebow in the jostling for that third-string quarterback spot behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.
But the CBSSports report also points to the possibility of Eagles coach Chip Kelly surveying the roster and deciding to ultimately go with just two quarterbacks and add an extra defensive player instead.
As noted by the report, the pick Philadelphia got is a conditional 7th round pick that hinges on Barkley being on the Cardinals' roster for six games in 2015.
Meanwhile, Fred Jackson, who was released earlier this offseason by the Buffalo Bills, agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, reuniting him with former teammate Marshawn Lynch.
As noted by the CBSSports report, his release from the Bills was a controversial one, as reports surfaced that Buffalo general manager Doug Whaley supposedly went rogue with his decision to release Jackson. Whaley has since denied the alleged rogue behavior.
The report points out that with a crowded backfield in Seattle, Jackson is likely to play a backup role to Lynch, who he helped mentor after Marshawn was drafted there.
The Seahawks' backfield also includes Robert Turbin and Christine Michael. And while the offensive line is relatively inexperienced for them to run behind at, a steady veteran presence like Jackson serves as a smart move for Seattle, according to the report.
