NFL 2015 News: Jets DE Charged with Driving 143 mph, Resisting Arrest

Talented New York Jets defensive player Sheldon Richardson is in trouble with the law again, Shutdown Corner reports. On Thursday, a story out of St. Louis surfaced that Richardson was clocked for allegedly driving 143 miles per hour and then resisted arrest by taking officers on a high-speed chase back on July 14.

According to the report, the St. Louis dispatch said that Richardson was driving his 2014 Bentley Silver Spur when he was caught speeding. When the officers tried to apprehend him, he increased his speed and drove off the highway. Richardson then continued to speed through traffic as he tried to get away.

When the officers eventually pulled him over, they found a 12-year-old in the car along with two adults. As told by the post-dispatch, the Jets player was charged with resisting arrest, exceeding the speed limit, following too closely, failing to use lights and failing to obey a traffic signal.

As noted by Shutdown Corner, the probable cause report revealed a few more details. According to it, Richardson appeared to reach for something between his feet when he was being stopped, and that a fully loaded semi-automatic handgun was recovered from underneath the driver's side floor. The apprehending officer also reported smelling strong odor of burned marijuana coming from Richardson's vehicle.

Before the reported incident, Richardson had already been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, reportedly for marijuana use.

"I am very disappointed in myself. I brought it on myself, me missing the four games," Richardson said about his suspension. "Just a little disappointed and embarrassed for my parents' sake."

Richardson was a first-round pick in 2013, and went on to win the NFL defensive rookie of the year. As noted by Shutdown Corner, he is widely considered one of the best defensive ends in the NFL.
