NFL 2015 News: Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson Initially Diagnosed with Torn ACL

Last week, the Carolina Panthers lost their young lead wide receiver when Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL while doing one-on-one drills. On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers suffered the same fate as wide receiver Jordy Nelson also tore his ACL as went up to make a catch in the first quarter of their preseason game against the Pittsburg Steelers.

"The initial diagnosis on #Packers WR Jordy Nelson is a torn ACL, source said. Horrible news. Awaiting MRI results to confirm," Ian Rapaport of NFL.com tweeted.

Should the initial diagnosis hold after an MRI, the Packers should expect to be without their No. 1 receiver for the entire season - a huge blow for a team with Super Bowl ambitions.

As noted by a Yahoo Sports report, Nelson is coming off a career year, making 98 catches last year, to go along with 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns. He emerged as Aaron Rodgers' top target, and is considered one of the biggest reasons the quarterback won another MVP award.

Shutdown Corner points out that with Nelson out, second-year wide receiver Davante Adams will be stepping in to his place. This development means that Green Bay could be looking at potential free agents to fill in their need for a third receiver.

"I'm not going to get into preliminary tests [and] opinions trying to beat someone to be first out there," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "Like I said, I'm hoping and praying for good news tomorrow. That's the way I look at it based on the information I've been given."

Added Rodgers, "It's difficult to lose a guy like that in a meaningless game."

The Packers should still contend with Rodgers in the fold. But despite Adams, Cobb and Ty Montgomery, as well as Eddie Lacy all capable of stepping up their production, losing a major talent like Nelson should be a huge blow to a good Packers team.
