NFL 2015 News: Dez Bryant & Cowboys Reach Agreement on Five-Year, $70 Million Deal

After threatening to sit out training camp and games if a long-term deal was not reached, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with the team, as reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

"Dez Bryant and the Cowboys have agreed to a 5-year, $70 million contract with $45 million guaranteed. Not signed but will be shortly," Chris Mortensen of ESPN tweeted.

"There was never a doubt in my mind that we wanted a long-term deal with Dez," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We just had to get the pot right."

It was rumored prior to the agreement that Bryant wanted to get paid similar to Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson who makes $16.2 million a year. His new deal is not too far behind, though, at an average of $14 million per year, which together with Demaryius Thomas, makes him the second-highest paid receivers in the league.

Bryant, who is coming into his sixth NFL season, led the NFL with 16 touchdowns receiving last season. An Associated Press report notes that he also has more catches (381), yards (5,424) and touchdowns (56) through five years than any receivers in franchise history"”a list includes Hall of Famers Michael Irving and Bob Hayes.

"I smiled the whole way over here. I couldn't even say nothing but just smile and laugh, because I couldn't believe it," Bryant was quoted saying on the team's website. "All I could think about is that it's a dream"”a dream come true. I think the only things that's missing is a Super Bowl."

"We know what he means to the team in many different ways and he's evolved to his credit, he's evolved into a player where he's indispensible to us," Jones said. "This is a real cornerstone as we look at the pieces that we're putting together."
