NFL 2015 News: Ahmad Brooks Charged & Ray McDonald Indicted in Sexual Assault Case

The San Francisco 49ers' Murphy's Law summer carries on as Shutdown Corner reports that linebacker Ahmad Brooks and troubled former teammate Ray McDonald have been named in a sexual assault case dating back to an alleged December incident at McDonald's home.

As noted by the report, the Santa Clara grand jury has indicted McDonald on one count of rape of an intoxicated person, while the county district attorney has charged Brooks with misdemeanor sexual battery against the same alleged victim.

The 49ers released McDonald last December after a string of run-ins with the law. In spite of that, the Chicago Bears took a chance on him by signing him to a contract this spring. Following another incident, this time a domestic violence one, the Bears released McDonald.

Shutdown Corner points out that Brooks was named in the case on Wednesday, while the 49ers said the linebacker was sent home from practices in Denver, where the team was holding joint practices with the Broncos. He is set to remain home when the team plays its third preseason game on Saturday.

"We take any charge against a member of this organization seriously and are in communication with the NFL," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "Ahmad is returning home to California and will not participate in Saturday's game."

As noted by the report, if convicted, the 31-year-old Brooks faces up to six months in jail. McDonald, for his part, could face a maximum of eight years in prison is convicted of rape.

In a civil lawsuit failed back in May, the victim accused Brooks of groping her while she was intoxicated at McDonald's home. The suit then states that following the groping, McDonald carried her to his bedroom and sexually assaulted her.

The 49ers have had an torturous offseason with sudden retirements, departures, a slew of injuries and now legal troubles hindering their game plans at every turn.
