New York Yankees News: Red Sox Outbid Bronx Bombers to Sign Yoan Moncada in Record Deal

The Boston Red Sox recently signed 19-year-old Cuban prodigy Yoan Moncada to an unprecedented $31.5 million bonus, a record-breaking amount, which they will have to double in paying a dollar-for-dollar tax for going over its international amateur bonus pool.

The Red Sox outbid the more publicly favored New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers for the five-tool switch-hitting infielder, and Yankees fans aren't happy.

New York fans took to Twitter to voice their displeasure over losing the talented prospect to their archrivals.

"I want to walk up to Hal Steinbrenner & Cashman & punch them in the face..why the hell didn't the Yankees sign Moncada for that money?" tweeted one fan.

"Hal Steinbrenner is the worst thing to happen to the Yankees in a long, long time. How do you not sign Moncada for that money?" said another.

While another offered his sentiments in less than 140 characters, "George Steinbrenner probably just rolled over in his grave, thanks to the Yankees losing out on Moncada to the Red Sox."

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees offered the Cuban sensation $25 million, while Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York said that the Yankees felt they can buy a proven Major League player for $60 or $70 million.

On that note, Moncada is set to start out in the lower minors.

As Yahoo Sports reports, scouts drooled over Moncada's breakout performance at an international tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. They followed him to his showcase in Guatemala and continued to be mesmerized by his talents.

Mike Oz of Big League Stew notes that the Yankees fans outrage stems from the club's lack of history when it comes to prudence, spoiled by big spending to get the best players, and the World Series. Losing a potential star to their biggest rival also doesn't help.
