New York Yankees MLB 2015 News: A-Rod Reaches Another Milestone, Can’t Escape Controversy
Since returning from a one-year suspension, Alex Rodriguez has been one of the best hitters on the New York Yankees. On Wednesday, he picked up his 1,995th RBI, putting him in third place on the all-time list just behind Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. But in true, A-Rod fashion, even such an impressive accomplishment did not come without a hint of controversy.
As noted by Big League Stew, Elias Sports Bureau is Major League Baseball's official statistician. The Bureau began keeping track of the RBI stat back in 1920, years after players like Babe Ruth started playing. With that, some sources that compiled RBI before 1920 list Lou Gehrig with 1,995 RBIs, meaning Rodriguez would be tied with for fifth place.
As confusing as that may be, the Yankees' DH is just one RBI behind Bonds, so Rodriguez would most likely be moving up the list anyway. Aaron had 2,997 RBIs over his career.
Earlier in the month, Rodriguez also had another career milestone when he hit his 660th career home run that tied Baseball legend Willie Mays' mark for 4th most in MLB history.
That feat was also mired in controversy as Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a series of bonuses back in 2007. One of the bonuses included $6 million should Rodriguez tie Mays homerun total. At the time, the Yankees were expected to decline paying Rodriguez the bonus because of his suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Despite all the controversies, it has been an impressive comeback for the 39-year-old. Apart from missing all of last season, Rodriguez also has to work against having two surgically repaired hips. This season, he became the only Yankees player to start each of the first seven games of the season. Rodriguez is on pace to have his best season in the MLB since 2008 when he was just 32 years old.
