New York Post Hack News: Publication's Twitter Account Hacked - Fake Breaking News
Of the worst things that can happen to a company, this can take one of the top slots. This week, the New York Post's Twitter account was discovered to be hacked after fake news posts appeared on the social media site. "Our Twitter feed has been hacked," the New York Post editor tweeted.
New York Post is a reputable newspaper company with a lot at stake should they be hacked. They were lucky that it was only their Twitter feed that was corrupted compared to the amount of data, intelligence, and anonymous source information the company preserves.
Also fortunately, the action was more child-like and less malicious. The Twitter hackers opted to release bogus news releases such as a change in the U.S. interest-rate policy, and "breaking news" that China had officially started firing missiles at the U.S. Navy. The posts didn't amuse any of the newspaper's followers, but they didn't do any lasting damage either. All of the posts were deleted only moments after being put up.
The fake tweets were supposedly written about breaking news concerning the U.S. One tweet read, "#BREAKING: Chinese anti-ship missile fired at USS George Washington." A second tweet spread rumors that "Federal Reserve head Yellen announces bail-in in emergency meeting, rumored negative rate to be set at 4pm EST today."
The Sunday business editor confirmed that none of these tweets were true in a public statement. He wrote, "Some New York Post Twitter accounts were briefly hacked and the matter is being investigated." As of yet, the editor has not confirmed who was behind the attacks, or why the crime was committed.
