New York Giants NFL 2015 News: Pierre-Paul Has Index Finger Amputated After Fireworks Accident
A report says that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's injuries from a 4th of July weekend fireworks accident were worse than earlier reported as ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated.
Previous reports stated that Pierre-Paul suffered burns on three fingers and parts of both hands. There was a report Monday that he could possibly miss the beginning of the season, but Schefter's report cites a medical source that says Pierre-Paul could play "sooner than people think."
Pierre-Paul's neighbor posted a photo on Twitter showing a UHaul rented out by the defensive end filled with fireworks, writing, "Jason Pierre Paul rented out a whole uhaul van full of fireworks and I'm currently scared for my houses safety."
CBSSports points out that Pierre-Paul was given the franchise tag by the Giants back in March, but has yet to sign the franchise tender that would have him paid $14.8 million for the next season.
There have been reports that the Giants had been working on a long-term deal that once had as much as $60 million on the table, which was rescinded after Saturday night's incident, according to CBSSports. Should the Giants do the same to Pierre-Paul's franchise tender, that would make the defensive star to be a free agent.
Apart from the uncertainty regarding his contract, the report also notes that Pierre-Paul could also be facing legal backlash from the incident as FoxSports reported that police departments in South Florida are looking into where the incident occurred exactly.
Any firework that "becomes airborne or explodes" is illegal to use in the state of Florida, according to a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman.
In a similar incident, the Tampa Tribune reports that Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson suffered what's being called "severe hand injury" in a fireworks accident. Sources close to the family have said that Wilson lost two fingers in the incident.
