New Steve Jobs Biopic News: Universal Pays $30 Million for Title and Rights to Upcoming Film

Soon after Sony Pictures dumped the project for a film on the Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs, Universal Pictures have taken up the biopic project. The Hollywood Reporter says that Universal Pictures is said to have paid over $30 million for the title of the upcoming movie.

According to latest reports, 'Prometheus' star Michael Fassbender has been selected to play the role of Steve Jobs in the biopic. Earlier, names of several prominent actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, were in circulation for the lead role.

A report by Latin Post says that the biopic will follow the events described in the late technocrat's biography by Walter Isaacson. Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin has written the screen adaptation of Steve Jobs' biography. Soon after Jobs' death in 2011, Sony purchased the rights to make a biopic from Isaacson's biography. Although Sony Pictures did not offer any reasons for quitting the project, it is believed that they found it difficult to accommodate the film into the studio's schedule.

Produced by Mark Gordon, Scott Rudin and Guymon Casady, the biopic will be directed by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle. Originally, David Fincher was set to direct the project, but, in April, he announced his decision to be out of the project.

Jobs led a very dramatic life and Isaacson has documented most aspects of this technocrat-entrepreneur's life in the biography. In the late 1970s, Jobs founded Apple along with Steve Wozniak and subsequently reached the apex of the electronics industry. He was, however, driven out of the company he co-founded just after few years following a boardroom vote against him.

He returned to Apple in the 1990s when the company was facing difficult times. During his second stint in the company, Jobs was instrumental in launching a number of successful Apple products and introducing pioneering technology. He helped Apple to become the most valuable company in the United States and contributed in producing hugely popular iPhone.

On a side note, Jobs was just 56 years old when he died after a long battle with cancer.
