New Smartwatch News: Google, Tag Heuer, & Intel Team Up to Produce New Android Device

Swiss watch and fashion accessories manufacturer Tag Heuer announced on Thursday that it will partner with Google and Intel to manufacture a premium Android Wear smartwatch. The upcoming luxury smartwatch is expected to be launched "by the end of the year."

According to Tech Radar, while the Swiss manufacturer did not reveal any detail regarding the shape, feature or price of the upcoming smartwatch, it is expected that the wearable device will come in a case that reflects the classic Tag Heuer Monaco "square, but not quite" profile.

The report further states that David Singleton, Google's Android Wear director of engineering, has confirmed that the new smartwatch will run Android Wear, "bringing the vast ecosystem of developers who design for Android."

As it appears to be unlikely that it will ever work with iOS because that would provide Google an app store within the App Store. It is likely that working with Apple's platform is very slight, but Jean-Claude Biver, a Tag Heuer board member, appeared to hint that this issue could possibly be decided by the "end of the year."

As far as Tag Heuer is concerned, the company described the upcoming smartwatch as "A connection to tomorrow," and "a mix of technology and beauty... emotion on the one hand and innovation on the other," is "forging a new evolution of the future of wearable tech" with Tag and its new tech pals, "blending expertise to build a device that people will love... To build a more beautiful smartwatch."

Interestingly, it seemed that Jean-Claude Biver is unaware of what precisely an Android Wear is, as he was seen asking Singleton, "Has this been in any other watch before?"

However, Biver was on stronger ground vis-à-vis his tech metaphors. He announced, "Only the dead fish swims at the speed and direction of the river," adding, "We will never be dead fish. We are a fish that is alive. Being first, different, unique gives you the assurance you will be ahead."

Many watch aficionados are now wondering whether the new smartwatch will be legally described "Swiss made. Referring to this, Biver was pragmatic, and said, "We can say 'assembled and made in Switzerland'." He added, "It will be made in Switzerland. 80% of the value will be from Switzerland. But if its engine is a microprocessor and that comes from outside of Switzerland we can't name it 'Swiss made'."
