New Android One Smartphone News: Google to Launch New Handset Exclusively for India on July 14

If a recent report is to be believed, Google will launch a new Android One smartphone in India for local consumers. India's Economic Times reported that the new handset will be nearly two times costlier compared to the first one, which failed to find favor among the customers, and carry a price tag of about $190 (INR 12,000).

According to IB Times, the new Android One smartphone will be made in collaboration with local handset vendor Lava International Ltd., and is scheduled for launch at an event in New Delhi on July 14.

During the global launch of the original Android One smartphone in India in September 2014, Google senior vice-president (Products) Sundar Pichai flew down to attend the event and promoted the device as one for the masses, but without compromising on the genuine Android experience.

For Android One, Google came up with a set of standards and minimum specifications, mainly what goes for other Android Internet devices, to make sure that its latest software would run efficiently.

The original Android One aimed at dealing with fragmentation of its software and also offered the consumers a Google-sanctioned genuine Android smartphone option to the rampant gray market handsets in the emerging economies. While Android One has not reached Africa yet, it is currently available in countries like Bangladesh and Indonesia.

The 3G Android One handsets that were released in India in collaboration with Micromax Informatics Ltd., Karbonn Mobiles and Spice Mobility Ltd., offered specs including a 4.5 inch FWVGA screen, Cortex A7 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1700mAh battery, dual SIM card slots, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage as well as a MicroSD card slot for up to 32GB expansion. These came with the assurance of software updates from Google directly for two years.

Despite all these, the phones did not sell as per expectations, and only about a million units were sold in the first six months.

However, it is expected that Lava will have a greater say this time, and together with Google, it will ensure that the new phone is available online as well as in physical retail stores, the business newspaper reported.

As of now, not much information regarding the specs of the upcoming smartphone is available, except that it will have 2GB RAM, a 5-inch display and ship with a Mediatek processor.
