Netflix New Movie News: Streaming Service Granted Rights for '6 Years' Film at SXSW
At this year's SXSW, the drama movie 6 Years was acquired by Netflix, which means that the film will release on the streaming service later this year.
6 Years was directed by A Teacher's Hannah Fidell and was produced by the Duplass Brothers. According to Deadline it is the first major deal of SXSW (South by Southwest) 2015, capping at about $1 million.
In January, Netflix signed a deal with Duplass Brothers Productions to produce four movies that will be distributed on the streaming-video service after a short theatrical release window, according to Variety.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer said, "We are thrilled to bring this terrific film 6 Years to audiences at SXSW and Netflix, and to extend our deal with the Duplass brothers in the process."
Mark Duplass added, "Jay and I couldn't be more psyched to expand our producing relationship with Netflix. All the more fun to do it with 6 Years in that Hannah's first movie, A Teacher, really found its core audience on Netflix."
The film is about two young lovers whose relationship begins to falter. Stars Taissa Farmiga from "American Horror Story" and Ben Rosenfield from "Boardwalk Empire" are cast in the main roles.
Also appearing in 6 Years is Lindsay Burdge, Joshua Leonard, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Jennifer Lafluer and Peter Vac. Along with Duplass Brother Productions, the film was produced by Kelly Williams, Johnson Duffy and Andrew Logan in association with Arts and Labor.
Duplass Brothers Productions isn't the only one to sign deals with Netflix. Since its announcement to join the movie business, Netflix has also signed contracts with Adam Sandler to produce films and Leonardo DiCaprio on a feature-length documentary about the environment.
