Nepal Earthquake News: US Military Chopper, UH-1 'Huey', Missing in Nepal

On Tuesday, a UH-1 "Huey" helicopter disappeared in Nepal. Six United Stated Marines and two Nepalese soldiers were on board at the time of the disappearance, according to reports.

The United States Pacific Command told ABC News that the helicopter went missing somewhere near Charikot, Nepal at around 10:00 pm local time.

The team was on its way to help with the relief and rescue efforts in the city after the powerful aftershocks that took place on Tuesday. The quake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, injured more than 1,000 people and killed 36.

The helicopter has lost radio contact, but according to reports from USA Today, there is no evidence that there has been a crash.

If there had been any radio contact, it is likely that the emergency beacon was set off, although the signal may be lost in a remote area.

The search for the aircraft and its personnel continue. So far, hours have been spent searching the mountains both on foot and by air, but there have been no signs of the aircraft.

The radio transmissions that took place before contact was lost indicates that the crew was experiencing some kind of problem with fuel before it went missing.

Captain Cassandra M. Gesecki, a public affairs officer for the United States Joint Task Force has said that there have been no confirmed sightings of the chopper.

"Everyone is staying positive," stated Gesecki. "We are trained for this kind of scenario."

The area where the helicopter lost contact is close to the epicenter of the earthquake that took place on Tuesday.

Officials hope that the helicopter crew is alive, perhaps in an area where they cannot pick up a radio signal.
