NCAA 2015 News: Kentucky's Road to No. 1 Seed in March Madness Tournament - Selection Committee's Tough Call
The NCAA tournament selection committee had until 6:00 pm Sunday to email CBS with a completed bracket right before the selection show. The time before that had them stuck with a few tricky decisions, and The Dagger highlighted a few intriguing ones in a recent report.
The Kentucky Wildcats with their undefeated regular season were a shoo-in for a No. 1 seed, with Big East regular season and tournament champion Villanova being the only other safe bet to get all the perks that come with being a No. 1 seed.
As pointed out by The Dagger, that leads to four other teams considered elite looking to be awarded with the last two No. 1 spots.
Should the Duke Blue Devils be given a No. 1 seed, they will be the first team since 2009 that have gotten one despite not winning the ACC regular season or conference tournament titles. They do, however, have a good collection of wins at 29-4, with wins on the road against other No. 1 seed contenders Wisconsin and Virginia.
Wisconsin (30-3) emerged as a possible No. 1 seed following the semifinal losses by Duke and Virginia, while Arizona (31-3) despite its stellar record, is considered a dark horse for a No. 1 seed.
The Dagger report also points out that there will also be another curious question should Wisconsin drop to a No. 2 seed. Citing geographic proximity, being No. 2 could potentially put the Badgers in the same region as the undefeated Wildcats. The report also calls that possibility a disservice to both teams.
Over the weekend, Kentucky steamrolled the Auburn Tigers 91-67 in the SEC Semifinals, booking a date with rival Kansas in the SEC championship.
The NCAA tournament kicks off its second round on March 19-20. The third round follows on March 21-22, while the Sweet 16, and the Elite Eight is slated for March 26-27, and March 28-29, respectively.
