NBA News, Rumors: Tristan Thompson Rejects $13M Per Season Extension From Cleveland Cavaliers
Tristan Thompson reportedly turned down the offer for an extension in Cleveland Cavaliers in the amount of $13 million per year.
The agreement was supposedly a four-year contract worth $52 million. The offer is reportedly above Thompson's market number. Sports enthusiasts have described him as a player with "average skills and average efforts."
The Cavaliers power forward moves well in the court, executes flexible defenses and opens offensive opportunities. Despite his skills, Thompson has limitations and he has shown inconsistencies inside the court.
Although there is no confirmation yet if the offer and rejection actually happened, there are already rumors about the possible reasons.
Thompson is represented by Lebron James' agent Ritch Paul under Klutch Sports. Lebron is behind Klutch Sports who enlists high school, college and NBA players to join the agency. There is a speculation that since Thompson and Lebron are under the same agency, the former would like to use the latter's influence to get his desired results.
Due to the rejection, rumors surfaced that Thompson and Paul were "being greedy" and were planning to discuss the contract again with the Cavaliers offseason. Reports say that the Cavaliers will be willing to overpay Thompson because of his connection with Lebron who is the team's most valuable player.
On the other hand, Thompson is reportedly making a smart decision since the salary cap for NBA players will increase in 2016. While there is no assurance that $13 million will be his value for next year, it is still possible that the said amount is just a bargain after the salary cap. Thompson can reportedly choose to accept Cavaliers standard offer for this summer and proceed to become a free agent next year to get higher deals.
As of this time, Thompson and Paul have not released an official statement regarding the issue as well as Lebron and the Cavaliers.
Amidst the controversies, the Cleveland Cavaliers will play against Charlotte Hornets at 7:30 pm on Jan. 23.
