NBA Free Agency News: Gasol Stays in Memphis for $110 Million, Mo Williams Returns to Cavs
Despite being one of the biggest names in free agency, Marc Gasol did not schedule interviews with other teams, making clear his intention to stay with the Memphis Grizzlies, and recently Yahoo Sports reports that the skilled big man has agreed to a five-year $110 million maximum contract to stay put.
As noted by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the deal includes an early-termination option after the fourth year of the contract.
The 30-year-old Spaniard attended high school in Memphis and has spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with the Grizzlies. In recent years, Gasol has established himself as one of the most talented centers in the league. Last season, he averaged a career-best 17.4 points, along with 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while playing in all but one of the team's games.
Gasol helped lead Memphis to a 2-1 series lead in the second round of the playoffs before losing to eventual champions Golden State Warriors.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers carried on with their busy offseason by agreeing to terms with free agent guard Mo Williams. The deal agreed upon is reportedly worth $4.3 million for two years, with a player option for the second season, according to Yahoo Sports' sources.
Williams played two-plus seasons with the Cavs from 2008-11, and was named to his lone All-Star team in 2009. Last season, he was traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Charlotte Hornets, and averaged 17.2 points and six assists in 27 games for the Hornets.
The Cavs have agreed to $240 million worth of contracts with free agents this offseason, bringing back Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and Iman Shumpert. LeBron James has yet to agree to terms with the team, while the Cavs have expressed their desire to bring back two more free agents in J.R. Smith and Matthew Dellavedova.
