NBA Free Agency 2015 News: Kendrick Perkins Moves To New Orleans, Jefferson to Cavaliers
On last week Tuesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers added to their off season gathering, after agreeing to a one year contract with Richard Jefferson. Jefferson will provide the sorely needed wing depth for the team, so the next focus will be J.R. Smith.
Smith is an unrestricted free agent, and declined his player option for this season. However, he is expected to have a meeting with the Cavs sometime this week.
Other teams across the league are trying to fill in their open roster spots as well.
When Jefferson began his free agency, it was expected that he would return to Dallas, but then DeAndre Jordan reneged on his deal with the Mavericks.
Jefferson, who is nearly at the end of his career and has participated in the NBA Finals twice, has his eyes on another title, and without Jordan, it is not likely that he will get that from Dallas.
Jefferson averaged 5.8 points per game last season, and he will likely take over Shawn Marion's role on the Cavaliers.
Cleveland was looking for a reliable veteran as opposed to a younger player like Joe Harris, or a rookie like Sir'Dominic Pointer.
Jefferson has also proved that he can be counted on as a shooting threat, having made almost 43 percent of his shots from the three point range last season with Dallas. Kendrick Perkins also joined the Cavaliers in February, deciding that a chance to play with LeBron James was worth more than a reunion with his former head coach, Doc Rivers.
However, he did not make much of an impact on court. He has agreed to a one year deal with New Orleans since.
