NBA Draft 2015 News: Sixers Looking at Porzingis as 3rd Overall Pick
With the 2015 NBA Draft fast approaching, teams are putting out reports designed to work on their respective favors. One of the latest reports to come out is that the Philadelphia 76ers, who own the third overall pick in the draft, is that they're eyeing Kristaps Porzingis.
According to Chad Ford of ESPN, while guards Emmanuel Mudiay and D'Angelo Russell's names have been linked to the third pick for months, the last few weeks have seen multiple sources around the league suspecting that Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie could possibly be leaning towards selecting the 7'1" Latvian as the third overall selection on June 25.
With the news of a setback in Joel Embiid's recovery from his injured foot, one could make sense of the Sixers drafting another seven footer. Add to that Hinkie's affinity for drafting the best player available over actual need, and the Porzingis rumors could have some weight.
Ford does point out, that one rival GM thinks that the Porzingis news is just a smoke screen to get the Orlando Magic, who reportedly love the sweet shooting Latvian, to trade up to three and give the Sixers yet another asset.
With the way the Sixers have been playing out their extremely long-term plan, you can believe just about anything until they actually do it. Over the past few years, they've drafted Nerlens Noel, Michael Carter-Williams, and Joel Embiid. Noel missed his entire rookie season before playing last year, Carter-Williams won Rookie of the Year, but was eventually traded for assets, and Embiid has not yet played in an NBA regular season game going into his second season.
Based on his pre-draft workouts, Porzingis has shown that he can shoot it from just about anywhere on the court, and possesses enough north-south explosiveness that teams would love from a seven footer.
