NBA Coaching 2015 News: Magic & Pelicans Fill Head Coach Voids, Bulls Set to Hire Hoiberg

Two of the NBA's head coaching vacancies were filled over the weekend, with another one expected to be officially announced soon.

Friday, the Orlando Magic named former Magic point guard Scott Skiles as the franchise's 12th head coach. As noted by Yahoo Sports, the 13-year veteran NBA coach owns a 443-433 overall coaching record with stops in Phoenix, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said it became clear during the coaching search that the team wanted to hire a veteran coach to lead their young nucleus of promising talent. They had three straight seasons of 25 or fewer wins under first-time coach Jacque Vaughn.

In New Orleans, the Pelicans hired Golden State Warriors assistant coach Alvin Gentry to take their coaching helm.

"We conducted an extensive coaching search that identified Alvin Gentry as the right person to lead our team. Alvin is a well-respected coach that brings many years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, creativity and leadership," Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said in a statement.

Gentry will join the team after completing his duties in the NBA Finals with the Warriors.

"I'm truly honored for the opportunity to lead the Pelicans as their head coach and am anxious to get started. However, my responsibilities with the Pelicans will begin immediately after the NBA Finals are completed. Until then, my complete focus for the next two-plus weeks will be with the Warriors and the NBA Finals," Gentry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls are nearing an end to a predictable coaching search path as the Chicago Tribune reports that the team is nearing a five-year deal with Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg.

Hoiberg was rumored to be the Bulls next coach even before the dismissal of Tom Thibodeau. In five seasons with Iowa State, the 42-year-old won 115 games and led the Cyclones to the Sweet 16 in 2014.

Hoiberg is known to be friends with Bulls general manager Gar Forman, who infamously had a tense relationship with Thibodeau.
