NBA 2015 News, Rumors: Steve Nash in Talks to be Warriors Consultant
If you polled the entire NBA, the defending champion Golden State Warriors should come out as the favorites to win it all again come next June. But that doesn't mean the Warriors are getting complacent just yet. As Marc Stein of ESPN reports, two-time MVP Steve Nash is advanced negotiations with the Warriors to become a part-time player development consultant.
As noted by the report, sources have said Nash, who expressed no plans of getting into coaching after officially retiring back in March, has been pursued aggressively by Warriors coach Steve Kerr and team president Rock Welts to spend a few days per month with the team to work on skills with individual players.
Citing sources, ESPN reports that both parties are in the process of finalizing a deal that will make Nash an occasional tutor to the Warriors' guards. The report points out that Kerr, Welts and the team's player development coach Bruce Fraser all worked closely with Nash while he was still playing with the Phoenix Suns. They are also some of the brilliant pint guard's closes friends in the league.
Nash, who was injured the whole of last season, performed a similar mentoring role with Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson, and has worked out a number of guards around the league this past summer - a list that includes Jeremy Lin, Dante Exum, Kemba Walker and C.J. McCollum.
The 41-year-old has recently spent his time with Team Canada, as the general manager. The team, while failing short of booking a trip to next year's Olympics in Rio, bagged the bronze in the FIBA Americas tournament.
Nash played 19 years in the league, finishing third all-time in assists (10,335) behind only John Stockton and Jason Kidd. As noted by ESPN, for eight straight seasons from 2001-02 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks through 2008-09 with the Suns, Nash's teams ranked No. 1 in the league in offensive efficiency.
