NBA 2015 News: Legend Darryl Dawkins Passes Away at Age 58

Former NBA star Darryl Dawkins has passed away Thursday morning due to a heart attack, the New York Daily News reports. The power-dunking center died at the age of 58.

"Darryl touched the hearts and spirits of so many with his big smile an personality, ferocious dunks, but more than anything, his huge, living heart," the Dawkins family statement read.

Dawkins was given the moniker "Chocolate Thunder" by Stevie Wonder, and was renowned for naming his dunks. He was selected 5th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers straight out of high school in the 1975 NBA Draft.

"The Sixers family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of absolute legend, Darryl Dawkins," Sixers CEO Scott O'neil's statement read. "We've lost a dear friend and an iconic figure, both on and off the court. We remember fondly not only his thunderous dunks, but more importantly, his powerful presence and personality."

"His endearing charm, infectious smile and unparalleled sense of humor will be sorely missed. "Chocolate Thunder' will always have a special place in our hearts. His family is in our thoughts and prayers."

As noted by the Daily News report, after spending seven seasons in Philadelphia, Dawkins was traded to the Nets in 1982. Following a string of injuries, 1983-84 saw the 6-11 center play his last complete season. He would later attempts comebacks with stints in Utah with the Jazz and in Detroit with the Pistons from 1987-89.

"He had an amazing personality and touched everyone in a positive way," read the Brooklyn Nets' statement. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Dawkins family and to all those who had the pleasure of knowing Darryl. He will be deeply missed."

Some of the colorful names Dawkins gave his dunks were "Yo Mama," "In-Your-Face Disgrace," "Dunk You Very Much," and "Sexophonic Delight."
