NBA 2015 News: Lakers Looking to Bring Back World Peace; Hornets Sign Kidd-Gilchrist to $52 Million Extension
The past couple of offseasons, the Los Angeles Lakers have whiffed at free agency, having to settle instead for cultivating young talent through the draft. On Monday, Adrain Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that the Lakers are now considering signing former Laker Metta World Peace to a one-year deal.
This summer, World Peace has been frequently seen at the team's practice facility playing against the likes of 2014 seventh overall pick Julius Randle. Last year, the one-time world champion made stops playing in China and Italy.
Wojnarowski notes that there are varying degrees of interest within the Lakers organization to bring back their former defensive ace, but writes that the idea has been met with enthusiasm from Kobe Bryant.
World Peace played four seasons in Los Angeles from 2009-13. His last appearance in the NBA was with the New York Knicks, who waived him during the 2013-14 season.
In Charlotte, the Hornets and defensive specialist Michael Kidd-Gilchrist have agreed to a four-year, $52 million contract extension, the Associated Press reports.
A source familiar with the situation spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal has yet to be officially announced. Yahoo Sports was first to report on the deal.
Last season, Kidd-Gilchrist averaged a career-high 10.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 55 regular season games with the Hornets.
"He's totally changed his shooting mechanics really more than any player I've ever seen," Hornets coach Steve Clifford said of his athletic forward known for having one of the most awkward looking jump shots in the league.
As noted by the AP report, last season, the second overall pick of the 2012 draft worked alongside former NBA sharpshooter Mark Price to fix his shot. Price, who was an assistant coach with the Hornets last season, has since moved on to head coaching duties for the Charlotte 49ers of the NBA D-League.
