NBA 2015 News: Injury Bug Taking Out Major Players Early in the Season
The 2015 injury bug has been quick to bite as less than a month into the year, a couple of key players, and potentially another major superstar, have already seen their seasons come to an abrupt close.
The Detroit Pistons worst fears have been realized, as guard Brandon Jennings will be missing the rest of the season due to a ruptured left Achilles tendon, the Associated Press reports.
After a horrible start to the season, the Pistons have had a notable resurgence winning 12 of their last 16 games before dropping their last game in Toronto. That run has put the team back in the running for a possible playoff spot.
Jennings played a major role during the turnaround, and more than the 15.4 points, 6.6 assists he has averaged this season, it's his newfound ability to run this Pistons team that Detroit will miss greatly.
"It's definitely a tough loss for us. He's a huge part of the success we've had recently," forward Greg Monroe told reporters.
"It's tough for us, but it's even tougher for him and I feel real bad for him because he was playing so well and then to have it end when he was on such a run is really unfortunate," Pistons coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy was quoted saying.
Over the weekend, Brooklyn Nets forward Mirza Teletovic also saw his season end when he was diagnosed with multiple blood clots in his lungs.
During last Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Teletovic left the game after experiencing shortness of breath.
A series of tests that included a CT scan revealed the gravity of the situation. The official medical term for what Teletovic has is bilateral pulmonary embolus, ESPN reports.
In Los Angeles, Kobe Bryant, who suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder is still awaiting diagnosis from Dr. Neal ElAttrache on how to approach the injury.
The announcement by the Los Angeles Lakers on whether to shut down Bryant for the rest of the season is expected to come out soon.
