'Mulan' New Movie News: Disney Animated Film Gets Picked Up for Live Action Adaptation

Disney has officially announced their next live action venture will be 1998's 'Mulan.' They've reportedly just bought a script from writers Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, which centers on the character that Mulan was based on.

"The 1998 film, directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, followed a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. With the help of her trusty dragon sidekick Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and, eventually, one of the country's greatest heroines. It earned $304.3 million worldwide, earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations and resulted in a 2005 direct-to-DVD sequel, Mulan II," write THR.

The live action project is still in very early development and does not yet have any actors or directors attached to it.

The live action retellings movies from Disney appear as if they will be a long term trend, as in the past couple years they've become quite successful with them.

The recent 'Cinderella' release has earned $336.2 million worldwide since its release three weeks ago.

Up and coming projects include a live action 'Beauty and the Beast,' staring Emma Watson, and a live action 'Dumbo' film directed by Tim Burton.
