'Monopoly' Movie News, Release Date: Board Game Hits the Big Screen in 2016

We've just received news that the highly-acclaimed board game, 'Monopoly', will soon be making its way onto the big screen in the year 2016.

A few years back there was talk of a "Monopoly" film being forerun by director Ridley Scott, but that particular idea seemed to tank. The idea of adapting the board game was still a go.

Producer Randall Emmett spoke with Collider and confirmed that there was indeed a script.

"We've worked on the script for about nine months, we now have a script that we're going to go make this summer."

Shooting is projected to take place in Georgia and Louisiana, with "major exterior work" to be done in Atlantic city for the boardwalk.

A director has not yet been confirmed but Emmett has provided insight on what the cast will look like.

"The cast is young kids but there is one lead, older-a guy chasing kids, lets say."

Emmett agreed in saying the premise of the movie seemed to mirror the charmed '80s film, "The Goonies".

"That's a perfect analogy to what Monopoly will hopefully be." Emmett said. "There is a treasure map... It's a family adventure film."

The producer made it point to say he wants this movie to be enjoyable for all audiences and ages. He's pushing for this to be a family film.

Emmett has assured us that we'll see an official announcement of a director, cast, and a logline in the beginning of February, so we won't have to speculate on the movie's possible success much longer.

In the past couple years, board walk adaptation haven't done too well despite their original premise, such as "Battleship" in 2012 or "Ouija" in 2014. It will take something a bit more than the title to fill seats with a movie like "Monopoly".
