MMA 2015 News: Anthony Pettis Undergoes Surgery, Out 4-6 Months; Still Challenged by Nurmagomedov
Anthony Pettis underwent successful elbow surgery Tuesday in Las Vegas, as reported by MMAFighting. According to the former UFC lightweight champion's manager Mike Roberts, the surgery was performed by the UFC's orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steven Sanders.
As noted by the MMAFighting report, Pettis required surgery after suffering a torn muscle and ligaments in his right elbow, which he got from wrestling practice. The injury forced Pettis out of his scheduled fight against up and comer Myles Jury.
But while Pettis is scheduled to be out 4-6 months with the elbow ailment, he already has a standing challenge from fellow lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov. As pointed out by Bleacher Report, Pettis and Nurmagomedov have been trading barbs over the past year regarding each other's inability to stay healthy. Nate Diaz joined the fun tweeting that both fighters were made of glass.
It didn't take long for the feisty Dagestan-bor fighter to respond. "I can fight these guys both same night," Nurmagomedov told Ariel Helwani. "Before all the time, I ask UFC, "Please give me Nate Diaz, please give me Anthony Pettis. But all the time these guys scared and no give answer to UFC. These guys no want fight before with me. But now these guys talk s**t because I'm injured. Because I can't fight right now.
Nurmagomedov was scheduled to fight the red hot Donald Cerrone for what was supposed to be a stacked card at UFC 187, but had to withdraw because of a knee injury. He had just come back from a lengthy rehab for an injured knee he suffered just last year.
UFC president Dana White has not been shy expressing his thoughts about Nurmagomedov's gym American Kickboxing Academy, who has had a slew of fighters go down with injury after injury. Nurmagomedov did not blame his gym, but did say he might have to adjust his approach.
"If you want to win, you need to go crazy. MMA every day is a high level. You need to be training hard, to push yourself. MMA all the time has injuries. Next time, I think I train a bit more smart. I think this is very good experience for me," he said.
