MLB 2015 Trade Rumors: Jonathan Papelbon Interested in Blue Jays Franchise?

MLB veteran Jonathan Papelbon was not disappointed when the Milwaukee Brewers announced that they decided to re-sign Francisco Rodriguez instead of trading with him. In fact, Papelbon said he had another team in mind: the Toronto Blue Jays.

In an interview with CSNPhilly Papelbon said, "Yes, Toronto, interests me -- if it interests Ruben [Blue Jays' head coach]. I know some of the guys on their coaching staff. They're a good team. If Ruben can do a deal with them, I'd be interested."

Papelbon has the ability to veto trades, but he is looking for a winning team as his MLB career is coming closer to an end. According to HNGN, Toronto had been a possible candidate before, but they couldn't come to payroll agreement. The 34-year-old has a $13 million dollar salary and hopes to keep that salary in the next year. The approval was barred since the team only had about $7 million left to spend. According to Hard Ball Talk, Papelbon said he would have to discuss with his agent a possibility of forcing any team to trade him with his current salary.

The Philadelphia Phillies, who Papelbon plays for now, are looking to rebuild their team as their 2014 season proved to be a rather disappointing one. They rank 22nd in ERA, 21st in opponents' batting average and 25th in strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Papelbon's stats for 2014 with the Phillies were 39 saves with a 2.04 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 63 strikeouts in 66 games. The pitcher spent his first seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox, winning one World Series ring in 2007. He is also a five time All-Star player.
