MLB 2015 Trade News, Rumors: Los Angeles Dodgers Finalize $62.5 Million Deal with Olivera

The Los Angeles Dodgers finally have their $62.5 million Cuban infielder as Hector Olivera arrived at the team's spring training facility in Arizona after finalizing the six-year deal on Tuesday.

As the Associated Press report notes, the deal was reached in March, but had to await Olivera's acquisition of a visa. He successfully completed a physical with the Dodgers after he arrived in Los Angeles Tuesday. There had previously been fears that the promising infielder had a torn ligament in his elbow.

"I don't know where that rumor came from," Olivera said through a translator on a conference call. "There was a little bit of inflammation in my arm. It was just fatigue in the muscle, but I don't think there was any serious problem."

"He came through the medical exam really well. We did a very thorough medical review," said Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.

After spending the last month in the Dominican Republic at the Dodgers' academy playing second and third base, while being close monitored by team officials, the Cuban prospect believes he'll be ready to join the big leagues in three to four weeks.

"I should be ready by then to play at the big-league level. I just need that final touch and that's what I'm going to do here in Arizona," Olivera said.

Friedman, though, wasn't as quick to put a timeline on when his player would be joining the team. "It's hard to miss spring training and come out and hit the ground running," he said. Everyone is different. Putting him in game action will be very telling. We'll go off those cues," he said.

Team manager Don Mattingly agrees saying, "I know he still has to get into game shape. Once we get closer, we'll talk about it."

Olivera indicated that there were up to five teams interested in his services, but ultimately chose the Dodgers because of the presence of fellow Cubans Yasiel Puig and Alex Guerrero.
