'Minecraft' on HoloLens News, Rumors: Microsoft Bought Mojang to Mix Hit Sandbox Game with AR Headset?

Microsoft's HoloLens frequently comes up in news headlines, however this time around, sources are linking the tech titan's purchase of game developer Mojang, with the AR (augmented reality) viewer/device.

For those that can't recall, Microsoft made their move to purchase Mojang on September 15, 2014, for a sum of $2.5 billion. While there were surely many reasons why Microsoft would follow through with such a strategy, evidently, Mojang's popular video game 'Minecraft' was one of them.

'Minecraft' launched on Windows PC on November 18, 2011 and became an instant success while quickly rising to the title of the arguably the greatest sandbox game of all time. While 'Minecraft' has been hit with new updates and ports to Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3 and 4, the popularity and expansion of the videogame does not seem to be stopping.

Stepping back into Microsoft's HoloLens, new reports are starting to shed light on a wild combination between the VR device and the game. Evidently, the purchase of Mojang was substantially influenced by the development of the AR viewer.

According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in an interview with The New York Times, the HoloLens was seriously in the works during the time of the Microsoft Mojang acquisition.

He said, "Let's have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories," adding, "HoloLens was very much in the works then, and we knew it."

Beyond that, many fans of Microsoft can recall that the video displayed at the HoloLens announcement event in January, showcased a touch of the popular online game 'Minecraft', see video below:

However, with all the news about the AR viewer, Nadella made mention that he'd prefer not to overhype it like Google Glass, he said "I don't want to overhype it like Google Glass and say this is the next," he said, "I want us to be deliberate about what it is."

Nevertheless, a mix between the HoloLens and 'Minecraft' is certainly going to be an immersive experience, as noted by CNET Editor Nick Statt after he got to try it.

He wrote about it saying, "The demo turns an entire room into a lively game world, punching holes into tables and through the walls to reveal interactive environments that can be changed with the tap of a finger."

Last but not least, it's important to note that Microsoft has not announced any official games for the AR viewer yet, but that does not mean there won't be any. On that note, Gamespot reports that Microsoft is going to bring their HoloLens to E3 2015, which means there's going to be some sort of demonstration there.
