The Surface Pro 5 release date was rumored to be in October this year, but as we enter the fourth quarter of 2016, it seems remote that it's going to happen.

One of the more oft repeated reasons for the 2017 release date for the Surface Pro 5 is Intel's own Kaby Lake processor, as well as the Windows 10 Redstone 2 update. For instance, the latest Microsoft gadget is touted to feature the Redstone 2 out of the box.

But then again, the Redstone 2 won't be expected until next year, according to WinBeta. The update will come in two tranches, with the first one reportedly in June 2017. The first wave will concentrate mostly on the universal app platform.

The Kaby Lake, meanwhile, won't be unveiled until January next year at least, according to the news report. So the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date won't be announced before then despite all the rumors.

On Oct. 6 last year, the Surface Pro 4 was launched during the Microsoft fall hardware event in NYC. That's unlikely to happen this year since all is quiet on all fronts.

Also, there seems to be no info yet on whether Microsoft will include the keyboard cover in the Surface Pro 5. There's speculation that it will be included out of the box, which would bump up the cost a bit. The entry level Surface Pro 4 already costs about $900 so it's not going to be cheap.
