Microsoft Lumia 940 and 940 XL Release Date News: New Flagship Windows Smartphones to Feature Iris Scanner, Surface Pen
Recent rumors suggest that with the launch of its flagship devices, the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL, Microsoft plans to change the perception of the customers regarding the Lumia handsets.
Citing latest rumors regarding the upcoming flagship Windows Phone devices, which has been code named Cityman and Talkman, IB Times reports that the Redmond, Washington-based tech titan plans to take the competition in the smartphone market a notch higher by incorporating the iris-scanning security. This advanced security system will work as a substitute for fingerprint scanner, which is a common feature in most upcoming flagship smartphones from different tech titans.
Windows Central reports that Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL, as they have been dubbed, will be called Lumia 950 and 950 XL at launch. However, Microsoft has not offered any explanation as to why it is skipping a model number. However, hints can be drawn hints from the company's decision to pass over Windows 9 for Windows 10.
Apart from the iris-scanning security, the larger Lumia 950 XL will come with a Surface Pen in addition to a smart cover. The Surface Pen will be a useful addition on a large screen, which is expected to measure 5.7 inches. In fact, the concept of the Surface Pen has been successful in Samsung Galaxy Note line-up, which is available with a dedicated S-Pen that undertakes various operations.
While several specifications of Lumia 950 and 950 XL have been leaked from time to time, Microsoft is yet to confirm the existence of both handsets. In the meantime, these specifications make up the upcoming Microsoft's Windows 10-powered flagships.
It is believed that the Lumia 940 or 950 will feature a 5.2-inch Quad HD display with 1,440 x 2,560 pixel resolution, 20-megapixel PureView rear camera, a 5-megapixel wide-angle front-facing snapper, an impressive 3,000 mAh removable battery, in-built Qi Wireless charging technology in addition to the latest USB Type-C port. According to reports, the handset will be powered by a 64-bit hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, coupled with 3GB RAM and come 32GB internal storage, which is expandable via a microSD card slot.
As far as the Lumia 950 XL or 940 XL is concerned, apart from the increase in screen size to 5.7 inches, the device will use the 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 SoC. Even as majority of the details remain the same as the Lumia 940 or 950, the Lumia 950 XL will come with aluminium side-buttons, a lager 3,300 mAh battery unit and triple LED flash.
It is expected that Microsoft will launch these handsets at the IFA Conference in Berlin this September, while the sales will commence in October or November.
