Microsoft Band Features Review: Smart Watch or Just a Good Fitness Band?
The Microsoft Band can be considered an ambitious project undertaken by the Microsoft Company. The watch has merged the aspects of a smart watch and fitness band into its functionality. This however does not mean that the watch is perfect as it lacks in some qualities of a smart watch and also as a fitness band.
According to Techopedia, a smart watch is a wearable device that allows the user to wirelessly read text messages, access applications and calls on their phone without having to remove it from their pocket.
Microsoft officially unveiled the Microsoft Band on 29th October 2014. The band works in conjunction with Microsoft Health app which works on Windows Phone, Android and iPhone.
When it comes to smart watch qualities, Microsoft Band lacks in GPS monitoring, which a smart watch should have. This is according to a review done by CNET. Notifications do not clear even after reading them on the phone.
The watch also has problems with the Bluetooth and syncing. Its screen is relatively smaller than that of a conventional smart watch. Although the display is clear, the screen is smaller thus user interaction is hindered.
The watch also does not have the always-listening mode, which only comes on when the button is triggered. The voice texts are considerably low, since they are transcribed to the phone first. It does not have third party apps yet too. Its strap feels rigid when it is worn facing outwards. The band also runs for about four hours when the GPS is switched on.
In terms of a fitness tracker, Microsoft Band, seems to be perfect. Working alongside the Health App, it tracks activity and is also great for goal setting. The watch can monitor sleeping patterns, 24 hour-heart rate, and offers guided workouts. It also has features of light texting and browsing, email notifications, and reminders.
Cortana personal assistance is effective and interactive allowing the user to take notes and set reminders just by voice. The watch clock is big and clear, with display options that can be customized. Applications like RunKeeper and Gold's Gym set up and track workouts. They give workout prompts to the user.
The Microsoft Band integrates both smart watch and fitness band qualities which is something that has not been done by anyone else. This venture has been criticized to be overly ambitious, since the smart watch abilities of the device are questionable. However, for those who are looking for the fitness tracking features, then the Microsoft Band is a good option. It costs about $200.
