Michael Sam Relationship News: NFL Player and Vito Cammisano Split After Six Months

NFL Player Michael Sam has called off his six month engagement to Vito Cammisano, as reported by a source close to the athlete.

The source made a statement to Us Weekly on Tuesday, June 30th. Sam is the NFL's first openly gay player, and he and Cammisano began their relationship in 2011 while they were both students at the University of Missouri.

"They've been rocky for months," said a source to Us Weekly magazine about the pair, who shared on of the famous same sex public displays of affection in history when Sam was drafted into the St. Louis Rams in 2014.

Although Cammisano still has a picture of himself and Sam as his profile picture on Twitter, Sam, who is a former Dancing With the Stars contestant, has apparently removed all evidence of his ex partner from his Instagram account.

Some of the pictures that he deleted included one of their proposal on top of St. Peters Basilica in Vatican City in January.

At last year's ESPYS, Sam received the Arthur Ashe Courage award and gave most of the credit to his partner for encouraging him to come out to his college football teammates.

"Vito was really the person who showed me I had to do it," Sam said to in a statement to OUT magazine. "I wanted us to be comfortable."

The two initially worked to keep their relationship a secret.

Sam currently plays as a defensive end for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He signed with the Alouettes before the 2015 football season.
