Miami Heat NBA 2015 News: Franchise to Offer Dragic Four-Year $80 Million Deal
There have been reports of uncertainty regarding Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade's future with the team, but it appears that same does not apply to Goran Dragic as the Heat will reportedly offer the crafty Slovenian a five-year $80 million dollar contract after he bypasses his player option for the next season to become a free agent, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.
The Heat acquired Dragic from the Phoenix Suns just before the trade deadline in February, and look to keep the shifty lefty by offering him the longest contract anyone can offer. The contract, though, is not a maximum contract (which would exceed $100 million)"”something that some corners foresaw for Dragic following an All-NBA team selection the previous season with the Suns.
The arrival of Dragic brought short lived elation from Heat fans, as they envisioned a core of Wade, Chris Bosh, Hassan Whiteside, and Dragic going for a deep playoff push. But things never materialized after Bosh was diagnosed with blood clot in his lungs, which effectively ended his season, and ultimately the Heat's playoff aspirations.
After starting off slow upon his arrival at South Beach averaging just 13.8 points as a member of the Heat in February, Dragic eventually found his form hiking up his average to 17 points in March, and 17.9 in April. He finished the season norming 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
"As long as I'm happy with the environment and a healthy organization, that's the most important thing," Dragic said back in May. "The next three, four, five years"”I want to spend it on this kind of team, like the Miami Heat. They have great players, great coaching staff and great training staff."
Dragic also expressed that as long as his representatives can "speak the same language' financially, he expected to be back with the Heat.
