Mexico Coach Miguel Herrera Fired for Punching Journalist
Two days after leading Mexico to a Gold Cup title, animated, and frequently combustible coach Miguel Herrera has been fired for allegedly punching a TV reporter.
Herrera was let go by incoming federation president Decio de Maria who said the coach's conduct was not in keeping with "the spirit of fair and respectful competition," The Guardian reports.
"After listening to my colleagues, I have made the decision to take Miguel Herrera our of the national team," de Maria said. "It is not a simple decision, but it is the correct one."
Christian Martinoli, a journalist with TV Azteca, told AS Mexico that Herrera punched him in the neck and challenged him to a fight at the airport on Monday, as reported by CBSSports.com.
"Matches never finish, and as public figures we have to keep that in mind. Everyone has had an opinion, but our values have to be kept, and no one can be above the type of situation we saw on Monday at the Philadelphia airport," de Maria added.
As the report notes, Martinoli had been critical of the coach during the Gold Cup.
"Everyone will have his version of events and he probably will deny it" Martinoli said.
As pointed out by CBSSports.com, despite winning the Gold Cup, Mexico struggled early in the tournament, winning only one group stage game, and advancing to the finals thanks in large part to a number of highly questionable penalty kicks.
The report also notes that Mexico will need to find a replacement for Herrera soon as the Gold Cup champions are set to face the US men's national team in the fall for a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup.
"It is clear to me that this is not the attitude that a coach for the Mexican national team should take, despite having received all manner of criticisms, offenses and mockery of my family and my person," Herrera said.
