Mets 2015 News: Jenrry Mejia Suspended for 162 Games

MLB announced that the New York Mets' Jenrry Mejia has been suspended 162 games after failing a drug test. As reported by CBSSports.com, Mejia tested positive for Stanozolol and Boldenone.

This is the 25-year-old's second PED suspension this year, after also testing positive for Stanozolol last April. He was suspended 80 games in April and just returned on July 12.

"We were extremely disappointed when informed of Jenrry's second suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," the Mets said in a statement. "We fully support MLB's policy toward eliminating performance-enhancing substances from the sport."

As noted by the CBSSports.com report, Mejia's suspension is the longest PED suspension in MLB history, which tied Alex Rodriguez's 162-game ban last year.

MLB and its Players Association agreed to levy increased penalties for PEDs last year. As pointed out by the report, suspensions were originally 50 games for the first offense, 100 games for second time offenders and a lifetime ban for the third offense.

As reported by Big League Stew, Mejia has become a useful part of the Mets' bullpen over the past two seasons. Tyler Clippard, who was acquired Monday, was supposed to strengthen the bullpen as he was meant to be paired with Mejia and Jeurys Familia. The suspension means Clippard would, instead, wind up just taking Mejia's place.

"Alderson seems genuinely shocked by this. Almost can't believe it. Hasn't talked to Mejia yet," Mets writer Marc Carig tweeted about Mets general manager Sandy Alderson."

"Can't believe it"¦" Mejia's teammate Victor Black wrote in a since deleted tweet.

In seven games and 7 1/3 innings this season, Mejia has allowed four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts, and has not allowed a run during that span. Back in 2014, Mejia had 28 saves with a 3.65 ERA.
