Memphis Grizzlies NBA 2015 News, Rumors: Mike Conley's Facial Surgery Success, Still No Timeframe for Return
The Memphis Grizzlies nearly withstood a heroic effort from Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard in Game 4 as they attempted a series sweep without injured guard Mike Conley, but they didn't, and now they have to fly back home for another try at ending the series, still without Conley.
Conley underwent successful surgery to repair a fracture on his left eye caused by an inadvertent C.J. McCollum elbow back in Game 3. According to several reports, the Grizzlies have yet to release a timeline for his return, with a Commercial Appeal report saying that his recovery "could take weeks."
The Grizzlies' steadying force missed their Game 4 92-99 loss, where Lillard played his best game in the series, scoring 32 points. Conley's defense had been a big part of Lillard's struggles in the series' first three games. In his absence, Nick Calathes and Beno Udrih filled in for Conley, combining for 25 points, and six assists. Conley was averaging 16 points in the series, which the Grizzlies were dominating prior to Game 4's loss.
"I'm not worried about Mike. Mike is a fighter. He'll be back in no time," said an optimistic Udrih after Sunday's practice. Udrih missed Game 3 with a sprained ankle, but came back to play well in Game 4.
According to the Commercial Appeal report, Conley's surgery went well and is recovering in Memphis. The team also said that additional information about his status would be announced when it becomes available. Yahoo Sports reports that once the swelling goes down in the next 48 hours, team officials should have a better idea of Conley's possible playoff return. As noted by OregonLive, the Grizzlies played 12 games without their starting point guard this season, going 8-4 during that stretch.
Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 at the "Grindhouse" in Memphis, tip-off is at 9:30 pm ET.
