Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Fight Date, News: SuperStar Matchup Confirmed for May 2, 2015
Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s impeccable timing was a key ingredient in what made him one of the best defensive fighters and best counterpunchers in the history of boxing. Apparently, he also relied on the perfect timing to finally make a match with Manny Pacquiao on May 2 a reality.
"I knew eventually it would happen, but everything takes time," Mayweather, who initially entertained the prospect of the fight back in late 2009, told Yahoo! Sports.
"Everything in life is about timing. I have a good team and I waited until the time was right. He waited until the time was right, and the two teams came together and we made the fight happen."
Pacquiao's adviser, for his part, credits the two fighters' incidental meeting at a Miami Heat game last month as a turning point in the negotiations.
"No doubt, that was a turning point," Koncz said, with Mayweather also going to the Filipino's suite later that night to discuss the fight.
"I'd met Floyd many times, but that was the first time Floyd and Manny met face to face and got a chance to look eye to eye. I think that was a motivator for both sides to bend a bit more. I take my hat off and tip it to Floyd for stepping up to the plate," Koncz added.
"I think the timing is right now because I'm a lot bigger status-wise than I was," said Mayweather. "Status-wise, I'm still growing, but I'm bigger than I was. And I'm pretty sure that Manny Pacquiao, he is bigger too. I have a lot of fans and he has a lot of fans and the fans around the world have been anticipating the fight for a long time," the pound-for-pound boxing champion said about the fight that is expected to break all gate, and PPV records.
"I can't tell you if he's my greatest challenge, to be honest with you, because I haven't fought him before. He's a very solid guy, a very good fighter, no question a tough competitor. He wouldn't be where he's at if he weren't, and that's what makes this such an interesting matchup," Mayweather said.
