Mayweather Jr. News: Boxing Champ's Camp Officially Announces Andre Berto as Sep. 12 Opponent

After weeks of speculation, Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally made the official announcement that Andre Berto will be his opponent for his 49th professional bout, and what he says will be his last. As reported by CBSSports.com, the Sept. 12 fight will be for the WBA and WBC welterweight title belts at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

According to the report, the fight, which is just barely over a month away, will be broadcast live on Showtime's PPV are at a to-be-determined cost, with a spokesperson saying that the PPV price would be in line with past events.

Dan Rafael of ESPN opines that the price will be set at $64.95 in SD format.

While Berto's name has been well circulated as Mayweather's opponent for September, there remained uncertainty on where the fight will be broadcast. The undefeated fighter previously said that he was considering having the fight broadcast on CBS for free, but ultimately decided to stay on PPV for the last of of his six-contract fight with Showtime.

When reports surfaced of Berto being considered as Mayweather's next opponent, there were large-scale criticisms for what most view as a mismatch.

"I'm not even going to talk about that fight. It's not"”that's, that's not a fight. I don't know if it's going to be worse that the Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather fight; I'm not sure. But I'm not talking about it," former world champion Shane Mosley was quoted saying.

Berto, a former welterweight champion in his own right, is 30-3 in his professional career, but has only managed to go 3-3 in his last six fights. While he is deemed by WBA as the No. 1 contender to Mayweather, the Independent World Boxing Rankings has him at No. 21 in the division.

A Mayweather win over Berto would put him at 49-0, one short of the record of 50-0 set by Rocky Marciano.
