Marvel's 'Agent Carter' News Update: Female Led Series Ushers Praise from TV Critics
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a habit of focusing on rough-and-tough male superheroes, the new spy drama, 'Agent Carter' ushers in a new kind of hero, or rather, a new kind of heroine.
In Marvel's 'Agent Carter', the love interest of a superhero (Peggy Carter) is just as fierce and capable of fighting as he is. Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell is the protagonist of her own story within the story of 'Agent Carter', carrying out crime-fighting duties and not waiting for a man to come and save her. The girl-power aspect of the miniseries is garnering praise from the media, as well as female viewers who have been yearning for a long time to see a female holding her own in a superhero story.
Even so, naysayers are dismissing 'Agent Carter', stating that other superhero tales have done the same thing years ago. For example, FOX network's 'Dark Angel' featured a pilot episode in which a female character who used her feminine prowess and quick wit to round up criminals.
However, Marvel Studios is using all this buzz to their advantage. There was a lot of hype leading up to the miniseries' premiere on Netflix, and there first two episodes of 'Agent Carter' have seen huge success. The dynamic female lead of Peggy Carter addresses real-world issues, such as inequality in the workplace (Carter works in an industry dominated by men) and the balance of being pretty and powerful as a woman.
In the end, viewers will have to wait and see if 'Agent Carter' can live up to all of the hype, and whether Atwell can continue delivering a strong Peggy Carter in the series.
