Marvel Movie News: Spider-Man Returns to Marvel, with Web Attached to Sony

The lackluster performance of the last Spider-Man movies, coupled with the public relations pummeling that Sony has endured since November last year have added to the rumors that Sony is in the market to sell the Spider-Man franchise back to Marvel and Disney.

Former co-chairman of Sony, Amy Pascal, will make the move to producer for the Spider-Man movie that has been brokered between Marvel and Sony.

Marvel, who has been hoping to purchase the rights from Sony for the past few years, offered billions to Sony. Sony opted to lease the superhero franchise, which is estimated to be worth $4 billion back Marvel in an unprecedented deal.

Marvel and Sony brokered the deal late Monday evening, but there has not been a financial deal released. With this deal finalized, Spider-Man will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which regularly premieres franchise heroes through associated films.

Spider-Man's first appearance is likely to be in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, the third movie of the franchise, scheduled to release May 2016.

The deal between the movie titans is apparently a mutually beneficial transaction as Sony seeks access to younger moviegoers already committed to the Marvel brand.

Marvel, long seeking renewed access to the Spider-Man brand, finally will bring the hero's story back into their control. The retooled web-slinging superhero will also receive a stand-alone movie sometime in 2017.

Marvel has adjusted the release schedule of upcoming movies in their franchise to make room for the addition of Spider-Man:

"Captain America 3: Civil War" - May 6, 2016

"Doctor Strange" - Nov. 4, 2016

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" - May 5, 2017
