Maria Sharapova News: Tennis Superstar Withdraws from US Open Due to Leg Injury
Women's tennis superstar Maria Sharapova was seeded No. 3 at the US Open and was scheduled to face Daria Gavrilova in the first round. That matchup will have to wait another day as Sharapova has announced that she is withdrawing from this year's tournament due to a right leg injury.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year's US Open," Sharapova said in a Facebook post. "I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong."
As noted by a CBSSports report, the Russian has not competed since losing to Serena Williams in the semifinals at Wimbledon. She has been dealing with the right leg injury that kept her out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto earlier this month.
Busted Racquet points out that this is the third time in two years that the 2006 US Open champion will miss the final major of the tennis season.
Sharapova was set to face Williams in the semi-finals had both managed to go that far. She has not beaten Williams in over 10 years, with her last victory against the No. 1 seed occurring in 2004.
Fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina will be taking Sharapova's place in the draw as a qualifying lucky loser.
BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller notes that in her pre-tournament media conference, Sharapova "cut a dejected figure," which he opines, makes it no surprise that she withdrew.
Sharapova had a good start to 2015, winning a title in Brisbane and following that up with a spirited fight against Williams in the Australian Open final. Since then, though, she struggled with illness at the French Open, lacked preparation time for Wimbledon, and now had to withdraw out of a major due to injury.
