'Marco Polo' Season 1 Release Date, Spoilers News: New Netflix Series Premieres December 12, 2014

Online streaming service Netflix will be adding yet another offering to their catalogue of originally produced content. A new historical drama series about famous Italian explorer Marco Polo is set to premiere on December 12; the series stars Lorenzo Richelmy as Marco Polo, and Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan.

Netflix's official description of the new series reads, "'Marco Polo' is an epic adventure that follows the early years of the famous explorer as he travels the exotic Silk Road to the great Kublai Khan's court. But Marco soon finds that navigating the Khan's world of greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry will be his greatest challenge yet, even as he becomes a trusted companion to the Khan in his violent quest to become the Emperor of the World."

Beautifully filmed in Italy, Kazakstan, and Malaysia, the series promises the sort of action that Netflix is becoming known for in its productions. It appears to be loosely based on the real Marco Polo's journals, with more than enough poetic license taken for action, romance, and gorgeous sweeping cinematography of desert, and alpine landscapes.

The first season consists of 10 episodes, and if the trailer is any indication, Netflix is hoping to order more from The Weinstein Company.

Zhu Zhu of 'Cloud Atlas', and John Chen of 'Twin Peaks' will be joining newcomer Richelmy, and veteran Wong on the screen. Dan Minahan ('Game of Thrones', 'True Blood') directed two episodes for the upcoming season, and executive produces the series along with John Fisco, and Harvey Weinstein.
