Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Fight 2015 Update: Money Remains Major Roadblock
Negotiation about a possible fight between boxers Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is still ongoing and reports have appeared claiming that money is still the main issue on whether or not the fight will actually happen.
Finance remain a major obstacle on whether a bout between Filipino eight-division-champion boxer
Pacquiao and undefeated American boxer Mayweather will ever meet face to face in the ring. A source close to Mayweather told Sports Illustrated that Mayweather is looking to receive two-thirds of the revenue from the Pacquiao bout.
However, This claim was refuted by Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter. He told Sports Illustrated in a
telephone interview that the number was not accurate based on his discussions with Les Moonves, the CEO of CBS. For those that may not know, Mayweather is contracted to Showtime, whose parent company is CBS.
The discussions about finances come after Pacquiao's recent victory over Chris Algieri, where he reportedly earned the lowest number of draws so far in his career.
Pacquiao reportedly only drew approximately 300,000 buys, while in comparison Mayweather's rematch bout against Marco Maidana drew 925,000. Based on the numbers, Mayweather is looking to be the bigger draw between the two, which may or may not be why he is seeking to demand more than twice of what Pacquiao will earn from their potential bout.
On that note, Arum, in his interview with Sports Illustrated, supported the decision to hold the Pacquiao versus Algieri fight in Macau and said the low numbers were simply due to the
fight happening outside the United States with no ESPN and no media involved.
Arum even pointed out the Ali-Foreman fight and also the Ali-Frazier fight, "The Thrilla in Manila" held in Manila, Philippines long ago, and their numbers. Both bouts drew numbers that were lower than expected simply because they were not held in the U.S.
He also addressed rumors that the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will happen in Abu Dhabi after an offer was made by promoter M. Akbar Muhammad. He told Sports Illustrated that he has yet to see the proposal, but they will have no objections so long as Mayweather also signs up.
